Programs and Services

We provide parents with a wide variety of programs, services, and support.

As a Parent Link Centre, KARA Family Resource Centre provides educational programming, groups, and events designed to create positive outcomes for children and their families throughout the Edmonton area.

Creative Play & More

Description: For parents and children (0 to 6 years). The focus of this program is on supporting a child’s learning through play. Each week includes some sensory play activities that encourage children to use their five senses and movement to explore and discover.

These “hands on” activities help support children’s development through play in ways that are fun and developmentally appropriate. We end each session with a circle-time and a snack is provided.

Drop In Fun

Description: This group is for families with young children. Come together to learn, interact, and connect with other families in the community.

Topics and resources relevant to participants’ specific needs and interests are explored. There are fun crafts, songs, music, stories, and other special activities.

Grow With Me

Description: This weekly drop in program helps parents interact with their babies in ways that promote bonding, communication, and the development of baby’s body and brain.

Each session includes parent-baby play activities, parent discussion of topics and resources, and a time to connect with other parents. A children’s program is provided for older siblings.

Kids Night Out

Description: This parent-child interaction based program is a fun, energetic getaway from everyday routines for families. It promotes the healthy development of children while families spend quality time together.

Join KARA for an evening of fun and family time. For parents, children (0 to 6 years), and older siblings.

Me & My Buddy

Description: A wise man said: “Men who change diapers change the world!” This program is for Dads and children 0-6 years old. Older siblings and Moms are always welcome!

Join your child in exploring some new exciting activities, such as pretending to be animals, playing tag, catching balls, or exploring different textures in our touch, feel and smell sensory bin! Or use your imagination creating your own game with items available.

Playtime Drop-In

 

Description: Children can explore a variety of toys and play areas set up by the staff. These centers may have various themes (e.g., a “farm” or “circus” theme, seasonal related activities, a “having fun with things from the kitchen” day, etc.)

Staff members plan appropriate activities based on the needs and interests of the families that come regularly (e.g., arts and crafts for a creative group, a “Gymboree” time for a very active group). There is lots of flexibility in this program and opportunity for input from the families themselves. For parents and children (0 to 6 years).

Sharing Circle

Description: The Sharing Circle is open to all caregivers that want to connect with Indigenous Culture and share their stories. The circles are specifically designed for families who want cultural exposure.

Literacy & Parenting Skills (LAPS)

Description: This 12 week program is for parents of young children who want to develop their language and literacy skills while discussing parenting topics. These topics may include child growth and development, building self-esteem, listening skills, positive discipline, dealing with conflict, and problem solving.

LAPS supports parents in becoming positive literacy role models for their children by enhancing their own skills and interest in reading and writing.

Books For Babies

Description: This program is for parents and babies (under 12 months). You will learn about what, when and why we read to babies. This four session program involves exploring books, having fun playing together and connecting with other parents. Each family receives free books, a book bag, and helpful information to take home.

Super Dads Super Kids (SDSK)

Description: This 8 week interactive program is for men and the children they are raising! Good kids don’t just happen… they are nurtured by caring, involved and responsible adults. The focus of this program is on responsible fathers – men who make a conscious choice to be the solid role models kids are longing for and need today.

The topics include the role of a Super Dad, child development, communication, emotional & physical health, positive discipline and work/life balance. When dads and kids are put together, good things happen.

COPEing With Toddler Behaviour

Description: Parents of toddlers (12 to 36 months) will explore how their parenting style; their relationship with their child and their child’s personality can all shape their toddlers behaviour. Parents will also explore ideas to prevent challenging situations from happening and ways to respond to challenging toddler behaviours.

Group members will view videos of common parenting challenges, then spend time having problem solving discussions and doing skill building exercises together.

Participants are expected to complete “homework” tasks that give them a chance to practice what they are learning.

Rhymes That Bind

Description: This is a 10 week program for parents and young children (0 to 6 years) to interact using rhymes, songs, and simple movement games. Participants will learn rhymes to help with daily routines and ways to support their child’s language development.

Nobody's Perfect

Description: This 7 week parenting group discusses the basics of parenting a young child (0 to 3 years). This group is great for first time parents!.

Topics include:

  • Looking after yourself as a parent
  • Keeping children safe and healthy
  • Helping children to learn and develop
  • Encouraging positive behaviour

Aboriginal Literacy & Parenting Skills (A-LAPS)

Description: This 8 week program is designed for people, with an aboriginal background, who may need help in assisting their children’s literacy development and who may wish to talk about their parenting strategies.

These topics include listening skills, passing on values and traditions, schools and our children, building self-esteem, talking to our children, positive discipline, and let’s talk about food. A-LAPS also encourages participants to examine their own literacy development and to begin the process of improvement.

Triple P (Positive Parenting Programs)

 

Triple P Group Stepping Stones

Description: Is the pressure of raising a child with a special need straining your family life? This 10 week program helps you manage problem behaviours like emotional meltdowns, tantrums, and developmental issues common in children with a disability. It also helps encourage behaviour you like, cope with stress, develop a close relationship with your child and teach your child new skills..

Triple P Group

Description:

Join this group of parents with children (3 to 12 years) who want to learn more about positive ways to raise children.  Parents learn to encourage positive behaviour and problem solve solutions to deal with children’s misbehaviour.  Participants meet as a group for 9 weeks ending with a celebration.

Please note:  Participants are expected to complete “homework” tasks that give them a chance to practice what they are learning.

Triple P One On One

Description: Certified facilitators meet one on one with parents who would like help dealing with a specific concern they may have about their child’s behaviour. During these meetings, the facilitator takes the parents through the steps needed to create their very own parenting plan. (There are usually 3 to 4 meetings).

Caring Families

Description: Parenting is rewarding but challenging. Caring Families is a family development program designed to assist families in building on the strengths they already have as well as learning new skills.

Parents spend part of the day bonding with their child while participating together in a variety of early learning activities, then participate in a group while staff care for their children. This is a parent/child interaction program so parents must attend with their child(ren) (birth to 6 years).

There will be time for one on one meetings with staff to discuss any parenting concerns, borrow various resources and visit with other parents. This is a 10 week program, 3 full days per week. Breakfast and lunch is provided as well as a snack for the children.

This program has been cancelled.

Kids Have Stress Too!

Description: This program is designed to help parents and caregivers of Preschool and Kindergarten children become more aware of children’s stress, and also to help children cope with and develop effective ways of dealing with stress. We’ll also provide some examples of activities and strategies that you can use to help children manage day-to-day struggles and stress.

This program has been cancelled.

Positive Discipline

Description: Parents and caregivers will learn how to provide structure and guidance for their children within a warm and caring relationship. The Positive Discipline program can also support positive changes where there may be relationship and behaviour challenges.

Parents will learn how to:

  • Set goals,
  • Create a positive home climate
  • Understand how children think and feel
  • Problem solve what to do in challenging situations

This program has been cancelled.

How To Talk So Kids Will Listen

Description:

Do you want to get your child(ren) to cooperate?

Come learn and practice some great communication and discipline techniques. These skills can help you guide your child’s behaviour in ways that leave both  you and your child feeling good, as well as build your child’s independence and self-esteem.

This program is perfect for parents with children 3 years and up.

This program is not being offered at this time.

Collective Kitchen

Description: The KARA Collective Kitchen is offered on the first Monday of each month from 12noon to 3pm. As part of the Collective Kitchen, you will learn how to prepare and cook two low-cost, nutritious meals to take home to your family. Participants will work together during the planning, preparation and cooking. There is no cost for this program but you must call to register as there is a limit on the number of participants.

Ages & Stages Questionnaires (ASQ)

Developmental Questionnaire:

Description: An ASQ is a parent completed questionnaire that screens 5 key categories – communication, problem solving, fine motor, gross motor, and social. As follow up, staff provide tips and activities to try at home or refer participants to services and programs that will be helpful.

Social Emotional Questionnaire:

Description: The Social Emotional ASQ is a parent completed questionnaire that asks simple questions about a child’s behaviour and social interactions. It is another tool to help parents better understand their child.

Please Note: ASQs are designed to screen children 2 months to 5 years.

Health For Two

Description: This program for expectant mothers offers prenatal information, nutritional supplements (such as milk coupons and prenatal vitamins), and support during your pregnancy plus two months following the birth of your baby.
